Name:Dr. Hope Renee Chandler
Birthdate:May 15
Location:United States

Hope is the Dream...

Dr. Hope Renee Chandler is a brilliant geneticist, with multiple degrees and a high level of intelligence. Most importantly, she is a mutant.

Hope is the middle child of Marcus and Mary Chandler of the Charleston Chandlers, a wealthy upper class family. Hope was raised in a world of old fashioned Southern manners where anything she could want was at her fingertips. However, she was a shy young girl and from an early age showed signs of an above average intelligence. She has always excelled at math, science and logical reasoning. Her interests really lay in in biology and chemistry. Deemed gifted she was sent ahead in school and flourish academically.

At the time everyone assumed Hope’s intelligence was the luck of the draw, a fluke. No one knew it was the result of a mutation until Hope was fifteen when she had a seizure and showed the first signs of her mutant powers. Hope’s X-gene causes the bioelectric signals in her body to travel faster and fire more often than in normal humans which means it is responsible for her genius intelligence. Yet, it is also the root of her seizures, caused by an over abundance of bioelectricity in her brain.

Though she was offered a chance to attend Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, Hope found the boarding school environment too confining and left after a year. She had learned to control her powers for the most part and was able to return to the academia that she loved. She graduated high school two years early and went on to Harvard for a pre-medical degree and then on to John Hopkins for medical school. At the age of twenty-three she got her doctorate and went on to study further into human genetics. She finally took a job at Worthington Labs where she was brought in on the Cure project.

She kept her own mutant powers a secret from everyone, including the other researchers and the government. Her brilliance pushed the project along, leading to the Cure that was distributed to the mutant community. Watching the news reports on protests and the debate over the Cure, Hope began to wonder if she had done the right thing and for the first time considered the ethical and moral reasons of her work, not just the science. When Magneto attacked the lab, she took her researched with her and evacuated. From the shore of San Francisco she watched the battle rage and people give their lives to protect the Cure she had helped develop. For the first time she felt guilty for causing so much trouble.

After the battle, Hope quit Worthington Labs and settled just outside San Francisco. Giving up research she chose to become involved with the real world and saving lives instead through a clinic.

...Of a Soul Awake

Hope’s mutant ability comes from an increase in the bioelectric levels of her body. Her nervous system works at a higher level than normal humans, not only giving her genius intelligence, but incredible reasoning skills. Math and science, factual memorization are her where her talents lie while art and artistic endeavors are out of her talent range. She’s uncannily good at puzzles.

She is also able to generate “bolts” of bioelectricity which she can throw at other people but only in a three foot range or transfer through skin to skin contact. These “bolts” render a person unconscious in seconds since their bodies are not adapted to handle the sudden increase in bioelectricity and they will stay that way for hours to days depending on the severity of the shock. This extra activity also gives her a natural shield from telepaths, making her mind a just a rumble of static to anyone trying to listen in.

The downside to this ability is if Hope does not discharge at regular intervals she suffers from grand maul seizures which can erase portions of her short term memory. She has also been known to short out some electrical appliances.

She has the odd habit of talking to herself nearly all the time and often loud enough for people to hear. When she has an idea she will write on any available surface and in a short hand code she developed herself. It’s very hard to get her attention when she is having one of these brainstorms.

A kind hearted soul, Hope is trusting and gentle. She hates violence, declaring herself a pacifist. Her good looks are of little importance to her. She takes more pride in her intelligence and will brag about that at a drop of a hat. Yet, she prefers to spend her time on her own, doing research or reading. She is polite and friendly in public, with an easy smile and happy disposition. When she believes in something, she will defend her cause and stand up for herself with a surprising amount of spine. Arguments and intellectual debates are fun for her and she'll readily engage anyone in them, but gets frustrated by losing or failure.
